Squamous
Cell
Carcinoma Complications
If squamous cell carcinoma
is diagnosed and treated early, the chances of recovery are very high. However, although it can be completely
cured, squamous cell carcinoma can be aggressive if not treated early and effectively. In fact, the possibility
of metastasis is estimated at 10% for squamous cell carcinoma of the sun-exposed areas.
Risk factors for recurrence
or poor prognosis depends largely on your age, lifestyle, size and thickness of the tumor. Location of the
cancer also plays a major role in the prognosis. Tumor of the retro-auricular region, eyelids, nasolabial folds,
scalp, and extremities of hands and feet are most likely to recur or to spread to other sites. In general, the
prognosis of squamous cell carcinoma located in the genital area or mouth is worse.
