Prostate Cancer Awareness

September 22, 2014 - From 17 to 23 September will be held the week of awareness for prostate cancer. The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness among men about the relevance to learn about the disease, to take tests for early detection, and most importantly to adopt a healthy lifestyle: Avoid tobacco, doing regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a diet rich in Non-GMO fruits and vegetables like apples, grapes, carrots, beet roots, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, soy, beans and other legumes.

Given that consideration, considering the latest prostate cancer statistics according to the American Cancer Society and the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2014, about 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year in the USA, of which approximately 29,480 men will die of the disease. “About 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.” In Canada, it is estimated that in 2014 about 23,600 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer (which represents 24% of all new cancer cases in men in 2014), 4,000 men will die from the cancer (10% of all cancer deaths in men in 2014); on average, 65 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer every day, cause the death of about 11 daily.

It is in this perspective that many Support Groups for prostate cancer in USA, Canada and other countries, in collaboration with 10s of organizations that provide support to people with cancer and to their families, are working to bring more light on necessary steps to take to overcome the disease during the this prostate cancer awareness period. The first step is to identify the causes of the disease and prevent them as much as possible, although some of them are not preventable: age and gender for instance.

Men are most at risk of suffering from the disease are often aged 55 or older, have a history of prostate cancer in their family, consuming a diet rich in saturated fat foods, consuming tobacco, or are of African origin. However, a man may very well be suffering from prostate cancer without being part of the categories mentioned above; the same a man may be aged 55 or older and have a history of prostate cancer in his family but does not have the tumor. However, it is a wise choice to not take any chance by stay away from any of the risk factors. This is the main goal of the week of prostate cancer awareness; to help you take a wise decision. Once standing on safe ground, the nest step is to recognize the early signs and symptoms of the cancer,

At the beginning, prostate cancer signs or symptoms can be insignificant and often neglected. In fact, several signs and symptoms may be linked to the tumor. For example, the person who has the disease may have frequent urination, weakness, decreased or interrupted urine stream, sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder, burning or pain during urination, the presence of blood in the urine or semen, or, painful ejaculation. However, the cancer can be active in the prostate gland without causing signs or symptoms; it is completely asymptomatic. That is why it is strongly recommended to test for early detection, which can be performed by medical professionals only. If was neglected, during this week of prostate cancer awareness, it important for all men over the age of 40 to discuss both the risks of prostate cancer with his doctor, but also undergo tests for early detection. These should then be made annually from the age of 45

Since the prostate is located below the bladder, close to the rectum, the test most frequently used during a routine examination is the digital (finger) rectal examination (DRE). During the procedure, the specialist can feel the prostate and ensure that there is no suspicious lump or other irregularities. The second test regularly performed is a blood test to measure prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a substance produced by the prostate. When the PSA level in the blood is high, this may be attributed to disorders of the prostate which can be malignant or non-malignant such as Enlarged prostate due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Further tests may be performed later to better understand the nature of the problem.

If irregularities are observed, to make an accurate diagnosis, doctors usually conduct imaging tests such as a transrectal ultrasound to verify the presence or absence of cancer. If any suspicious tumor mass is detected, a biopsy is then performed to remove cells for analysis. In case the cancer is confirmed being present in the prostatic gland, treatment will be the next step. Earlier the treatment begins the more chance of healing or survival the patient has.

Prostate cancer treatment is recommended to halt the cancer, and it may vary according to the degree of malignancy of the tumor: watchful waiting, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy are often the therapeutic weapons used against prostate cancer. Some patients use alternative treatment alone or in combination with the conventional therapies.

Common alternative treatments used against prostate cancer include, Maple Syrup and Baking soda, Cannabis oil (legal in some states only), B17 also known as amygdalin (banned by the FDA in the USA), prayer therapy, Juice therapy with organic fruits and cruciferous vegetables. These methods are controversial and often rejected by the conventional medicine. Patients are advised to do some research on YouTube and talk to their health care provider in order to make their own conclusion.

Remember, regardless of statistics and what being said out there, there is a cure for any disease including your cancer. You can become healthy, cancer free, and enjoy the rest of your life in joy and happiness.
