Oral cancer survival
rates vary depending on the location of the tumor, time of the diagnosis and the presence or absence of
metastases. The prognosis of a mouth cancer at the base of the tongue is often bad.
In addition, the prognosis
of oral cancer varies with age and race. According to the National Cancer
Institute, the overall 5-year relative survival rate for 1999-2005 was 61.0%. Five-year relative survival rates
by race and sex were:

62.4% for white men;

63.8% for white women;
·
38.2% for black men;
·
53.2% for black women.
